abstract = "The city of Altamira (PA) is characterized by a peculiar process
of urban expansion that began in the 1970s with the acceleration
of the agricultural frontier expansion in the Brazilian Amazon and
is now associated with the construction of the Belo Monte
hydroelectric power plant. In this paper, transformations in the
city occurred between 2000 and 2010 are investigated according to
Vegetation-Impervious surface-Soil Model (V-I-S) Model proposed by
Ridd (1995) for urban analysis based on remote sensing data. V-I-S
data were obtained by applying a linear mixture model to Landsat 5
TM images. Estimates show a 40% increase in areas of soil or
imperviousness at the expense of vegetation cover. Ternary diagram
of V-I-S highlighted processes of urban expansion through
transformation of rural areas into urban or through new
construction in previously urbanized areas.",
